The life and trials of Galileo are well documented, but the historical record raises more questions than it answers. For example, when given permission to talk about a hypothetical geocentric universe why was he then issued with a warrant preventing him for doing so? Or when Galileo was given permission to publish his Dialogue Concerning Two World Systems why was he then prosecuted?

This novella explores the possibility that Galileo is persecuted because his work undermines the writings of Aristotle, which formed the basis of the Jesuit education system Galileo is the victim of a small but significant conspiracy. Making significant use of the historical record this book traces a fictionalised account of key events between 1616 and 1633 that lead to Galileo’s trial.

Background
In 1616 Galileo Galilei, astronomer and mathematician to the Medici Court, is warned by Cardinal Bellarmino that he may not propound or defend the Copernican hypothesis that the sun is at the centre of the universe. He is however given permission to make use of the hypothesis in theoretical discussions. In 1632 Galileo writes The Dialogue Concerning Two World Systems, Pope Urban VIII personally makes amendments to the text before the work is published. In 1633, despite gaining Vatican approval, Galileo is tried and found guilty of heresy and The Dialogue is banned; during the trial an injunction is produced that has not previously been seen by Galileo stating that he may not hold, teach, or defend in any way whatsoever the Copernican theory.

Synopsis
Galileo is summoned to meet with Cardinal Bellarmino who instructs him that he may not hold or defend the Copernican theory of a sun centred universe, but that he may use the theory hypothetically as a teaching tool and in mathematical calculations. However, three members of the Congregation of the Inquisition are also present during this meeting but are prevented by the cardinal from serving their more severe injunction that he may not hold, teach or defend the Copernican theory in any way whatsoever.

After an audience with Pope Paul V, Galileo decides that it is safer not to publish any further astronomical works. When Galileo’s friend, Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, becomes Pope Urban VIII Galileo seizes the opportunity to gain Vatican approval to return to his astronomical work. However, he overestimates the level of support he can expect from the new pope.

Driven by intellectual jealously, hurt pride, misplaced loyalty and ambition three men in key positions monitor Galileo’s work and prepare a protracted trail to break his relationship with Pope Urban VIII and bring him before the Inquisition.

Father Caccini, a Dominican, sees the denouncement of Galileo as a career opportunity. Cardinal Bellarmino perceives Galileo as a threat to the Jesuit education system. Ludovico delle Colombe, a minor intellectual, is jealous of Galileo’s reputation. Their task is made all the easier by Galileo’s overbearing arrogance.
