But getting through the Academy can be difficult, and nearly half of the cadets who enter a new class leave before actually graduating four years later. Learn about the challenges presented to cadets by following one young man’s experience as a member of the Class of 1980, the first class to have women in its ranks. Out of the Blue Leaving the Air Force Academy Mark L Nelson 9780998088006 Books Reviews

Inspiring story of resiliency! Moved by Mr. Nelson’s openness to reveal important lessons learned to appreciate the journey his life has taken to drive his success. It was a powerful message to live a life of no regrets.
A very well written book, one can feel the compassion he had for his fellow students. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and feel his pain for what he went through. Keep writing Mark, you have more stories to tell.
Out of the Blue is a wonderful commentary on the changing views and policies of women in the military during the late 70's and early 80's, and the direct affect it had on the cadets themselves. Mark L. Nelson's personal account is touching, heart-felt, at times penitential, at times amusing, and most certainly inspiring. I highly recommend this book for young men and women who are considering a military vocation, that they might appreciate that the path that is now laid before them was not always easily forged.
I feel like I just pulled back the curtain in OZ! What a fresh honest look at the emotions that surround a young man's quest to find his best self. I have just begun reading this....stay tuned as I turn pages in the book and my own life and history. There is often only a thin layer that separates each of us as we continue to look within to achieve what we were born to become. Greatness lives in each of us.....it is a decision with intent that calls us to find it.

Thanks for sharing your journey Mark!
I found this book to be an interesting, personal, and compelling look into the students at the Air Force Academy, and the far-reaching impact of the first women to go through it. The style is sort of fish out of water, as the hapless Cadet Nelson struggles through adapting to the harsh, disciplined environment, all the while enduring the special resentment of the classmates who resist the changing military. With humor and heart, the author explores topics such as bullying and tolerance, and gives a unique look into the Air Force Academy and this historic class of cadets.
I found this story quite interesting and really liked it. It's not something that I would typically pick up, but I'm glad I did. Out Of The Blue gives the reader a real glimpse into life at the Air Force Academy through the eyes of Cadet Nelson. I found myself questioning how I would handle the situations he faced and identified with his acceptance of some things, and resistance to others. I think this book encourages people to branch out, beyond their comfort zone, and try something that they might think is extremely difficult or even impossible for them, in an effort to discover the best in themselves, even if that means discovering their limits. I think this would be a great read for young people considering any kind of military service. I admired how even at a young age Cadet Nelson stayed true to who he was, his own moral code, while striving to assimilate to an extremely regimented environment. The theme of 'life goes on' after what some might perceive reprieve as a failure, struck a cord with me. We are all going to try and stumble and sometimes 'fail' in life. Mark Nelson lets us know that the only true failure would be in not trying in the first place. Only through taking on challenges can we discover the truth about our inner selves and discover the right path for our own lives. Great read!
Not impressed. I'm an Academy Grad. In no way is this book a well thought out description of what life at the Academy is like on the whole. This appears to be one person who went to the Academy but was kicked out after one year, then they wrote a very short book on that brief year to supplement their income later in life trying to profit from that brief Academy experience. What limited perspective! I equate this to a book written about the P90X "journey" after only being on the program for 3 days. I'm disappointed that this book comes up when USAFA is typed into the search engine as this is not a book about the Academy at all, it's just about a person working through their own typical life issues that just so happen to take place there.
Well written,very inspirational
